Blossoms of Fire (Ramo de Fuego)

Wednesday, October 3 at 6:30 pm at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center
FREE and Open to the Public

Suggested Donation: $5-$10

Blossoms of Fire (directors Maureen Gosling and Ellen Osborne) celebrates the people of Juchitán on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, Mexico. Their Zapotec culture, rooted in a strong work ethic and fierce independent streak, generates powerful women, progressive politics and an extraordinary acceptance of alternative gender roles.   The film presents the women in all their brightly colored, opinionated glory as they run their own businesses, embroider traditional clothing with their signature fiery flowers, and comment with angry humor on articles in the foreign press that flippantly and inaccurately depict them as a promiscuous matriarchy.  In Blossoms of Fire we hear the women and men, young and old, gay and straight, telling their stories.  In Spanish and Zapotec with English subtitles.  (www.maureengosling.com, 2000, 74 min.).

Maureen Gosling will be present for post - screening for Q&A.

Denver businessman Luis Abarca’s commitment to the arts and culture of his homeland has produced one of the area’s largest private collections of Mexican fine and folk art.  Art from the Abarca Family Collection will be on display in the Arvada Center Theater Gallery as the second of three annual fall exhibitions to be sponsored by the Abarca family.  Last year’s exhibit was entitled OAXACA: In Living Culture.

This year’s exhibition, La Mexicana: Female Icons in Mexican Culture, will contain various art forms that feature and represent the power, influence and significance of females throughout Mexican history.  Some of the images to be included pay homage to La Adelita, La Chicana, La Frida, La Luna, and La Virgen, to name a few.

The Arvada Center is proud to continue to partner with the Abarca Family as it strengthens a commitment to Colorado’s Mexican community and its culture. Adrianna Abarca, the show’s curator, states: “With these exhibitions we hope to develop an appreciation and pride of the vast amount, quality and diversity of art produced by people of Mexican descent.”

Mexican Beet Workers: More Than Just Arms - History Colorado Center

Tuesday, October 16, 2012 - 7:00pm - 8:00pmPhotograph of farm equipment harvest crops.Beginning in 1942, the Bracero Program brought millions of Mexican guest workers to agricultural fields all over the United States.  Weld County's extensive network of rural farms benefited from this labor program that officially ended in 1964.  As a boy in Weld County, Charles Collins met these migrant workers from "Old Mexico" every spring, when they came to live and work on his family's farm.  Dr. Charles Collins - today a geography professor at the University of Northern Colorado - recalls how the Braceros influenced his life, and the way the program impacted his understanding of immigration policy.

Fundraiser for a School in My Neighborhood
Authors - Donate a Book!

Dear Colorado Author,

We would like to offer you the opportunity to support and reach the Valdez Elementary School community through our annual fundraiser, scheduled for Sunday, November 11, 2012, at Fuel Café from 5pm-9pm. The money raised will go to our before- and after-school enrichment programs, offered free of charge to Valdez students, and an art teacher at Valdez. This is your chance to directly help public-school students in Denver.

Valdez, located in Northwest Denver on 29th Avenue, offers an exceptional dual-language program. The program gives students the tools and experience to operate and be successful in a bilingual and multi-cultural community. Teachers, parents, and students share and learn from each other through their diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives. The more successful our fundraiser, the more we can help bridge the gaps that budget cuts are creating in our children's education.

This year, our Silent Auction is featuring a “Locally Made” section where we will feature creative works by local artists. We welcome book selections from the Colorado Author’s League. You may donate a single book, several books of the same title, or a collection of works by one or more authors. If you are also willing to donate your time, you may consider offering a “Meet the Author” event featuring a discussion of the book. We are frequently able to find families willing to host such or events. Please contact me if you have questions or other ideas about ways to donate.

Donations are tax-deductible. Our Tax ID # is 27-1078269.

We truly appreciate your support for the school, the kids, and our community!
